The skin is the body’s largest organ. It has several functions

(1) Acts as a protective cover, shield, barrier between the body and the external environment (heat, cold, dryness, dampness, wind)

(2) Has pores, openings allowing the body to release excessive heat, energy (in the form of perspiration) and or retain heat, energy.

(3) Sebaceous glands located throughout the body in the dermis (layer of skin below epidermis, outer layer of skin) secrete sebum an oily liquid that moistens the skin and hair. It also helps the body retain heat. Acne (raised, red lesions, pustules, blackheads, etc.) is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands affecting primarily the face and shoulders

The skin builds up (hot, yang) and breaks down, cleanses (cold, yin) largely according to foods, nutrients, to which there are only two: building and cleansing. Building nutrients, foods (protein, fat, meat, eggs, cheese, beans, etc.) build and fuel. Cleansing nutrients, foods (water, minerals, fruit, vegetables, grains, etc.) reduce, cleanse, cool and moisten.

Long-term low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, etc.) and high carbohydrate (bread, pasta, salads, tropical fruits, juices, smoothies, etc.) diets tend to cool, weaken and dilute digestion, reducing nutrient absorption, decreasing and thinning the blood (blood deficiency). Blood deficiency, in the extreme, tends to weaken, sag, thin, dry, crack and or bleed the skin producing partial facial flushing, red spots, splotches, acne, cracked skin, bleeding, pustules, eczema, exposed capillaries, blue veins and or translucent skin.

Too many building foods, protein and fat, especially animal (red meat, pork, chicken, eggs, cheese, fried foods, oil, etc.), in addition to alcohol, sugar tends to cause raised, red, hard painful, oily pimples, pus, boils and or dry flaky skin; warts, moles, psoriasis, tumors, etc. All excess sugar is turned into fat. Protein and fat build, thicken, fuel and heat. Too much tends to thicken, overbuild and overheat the blood, which in turn, overbuilds, overheats the skin.

The middle diet, meal plan adjusted accordingly is recommended. Try to eat simply and do not overeat. For deficiency, increase protein, fat (eggs, turkey, chicken, etc.), spices, cooked foods, (soups, vegetables), and a small amount of fruit (avoid tropical), for balance. For the overbuilt, eat less animal (red meat, pork, veal, chicken, etc.) and more beans, nuts, seeds, rice, vegetables, fruit (apples, pineapple, etc.). Space and or skip meals, especially dinner. Experience hunger and quench with water.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition of the skin that produces blister like formations that weep, release fluid before forming a crust, scale and or flake. Itching may also occur. Poor diet is a major cause.

The symptoms of eczema indicate deficiency via breakdown (falling apart). Low protein and low fat diets, in the extreme, tend to thin and weaken all structure and function, including the skin. Too many carbohydrates (pasta, bread, salads, tropical fruits, juices, etc.) tend to dilute and weaken digestion (acid, enzymes) reducing nutrient absorption (especially protein and fat), blood, which in turn, dilutes, weakens and thins everything else skin, hair, bones, memory, vision, etc.

Case history: In 1989, I developed a bad, hideous case of eczema. It first started as a pimple, blister on my index finger (left hand). Over the course of two months, it (blisters, cracked skin, bleeding, pus, etc.) spread to every finger up the back of hand to the arm. My other hand was affected eventually although not as bad. This happened while I was going to acupuncture school. It was gross. I tried every Chinese herbal remedy. Nothing worked. My skin kept getting worse and worse. I eventually turned to Ayurvedic Medicine (Ayurvedic Healing, and Yoga of Herbs by Dr. David Frawley, O.M.D.), which recommended the use of spices. My diet at the time was bland, low protein, low fat, sweet and cooling. I was living in Hollywood. Fl. I reduced juices, fruits, increased protein and fat and started cooking with spices (fennel, cumin, coriander, ginger, etc.). I always used at least five spices. Within three weeks, my eczema cleared up. My digestion also improved less bloating, gas, burping, farting, etc. I did have eczema as a teenager, although not as serious.

Diet related eczema is simple but time consuming to cure as the skin takes time to rebuild via proper diet. The middle diet, daily meal plan, adjusted accordingly is recommended. Reduce salads, raw vegetables, tropical and citrus fruits, cold drinks, milk and yogurt

Other causes of eczema: low levels of hydrochloric acid, Candidiasis and or food allergies, all of which can all be caused by poor diet (low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate, in the extreme).

Psoriasis is a painful chronic skin disorder characterized by dry, red, scaly skin covering the scalp, genitalia, skin, etc. that alternates between exacerbation and remission. It is a disease of excess, caused in general by too much protein and fat, especially red meat, pork, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, lasagna, oily, greasy foods (fries, chips, etc.) in addition to alcohol and sweets. Psoriasis generally occurs in conjunction with liver congestion, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, etc. The colder middle diet, meal plan is recommended.

Cushing?s Disease and your Pet

Cushing’s disease (also known as hyperadrenocorticism) is a condition precipitated either a pituitary brain tumor or an adrenal gland tumor which causes your pet to produce too much of the hormone cortisol. While much more common in dogs than in cats, in recent years it has been diagnosed as a complication of feline diabetes. Cushing’s disease generally strikes middle-aged pets (dogs, between ages 6-9; cats, usually 8 years or older.)

Symptoms of Cushing’s disease may include any of following:

• Alopecia (hair loss) and thinning skin – Hair loss (often in a symmetrical pattern) and thinning of the skin are common (and perhaps the most noticeable) symptoms in both dogs and cats with Cushing’s disease. Between 50%-90% of affected pets develop these symptoms. Hair loss is one of the most common reasons pet parents bring their “furry ones” in for an evaluation. It may begin as the failure of your pet’s hair to “re-grow” in an area that was recently shaved, followed by hair loss in areas of wear, (like the elbows), and then advancing to your pet’s flanks and abdomen. Left unchecked, your pet may eventually be left with hair only on their head and extremities. Additionally, your pet’s skin may become very thin (particularly noticeable in cats), easily damaged and slow to heal;

• Increased drinking/urinating – Pet begins consuming 2-10x’s their normal amount of water, resulting in increased urination. (In fact, previously housebroken pets may even begin to have accidents because of urine overproduction.);

• Increased appetite (polyphagia) – A common clinical symptom that shows up in 8 of 10 affected pets. Again, previously well-behaved pets may begin manifesting “bad” behavior (i.e. stealing food, “rooting” through the garbage, constantly begging, and increasingly territorial over their food);

• “Pendulous” or pot-bellied appearance to the abdomen – Abdominal enlargement is a common symptom approximately 80% of affected pets, and is a result off fat shifting to the abdominal area combined with a weakening and wasting of muscle mass in the abdomen;

• Increasingly susceptibility to urinary bladder and skin infections;

• Decreased exercise tolerance due to muscle weakness (myotonia), resulting in weight gain;

• Testicular atrophy and/or loss of reproductive ability;

• Increased pigmentation of your pet’s skin;

• Calcium deposits on your pet’s (calcinosis cutis) or, less commonly, in internal organs;

• Bulging appearance to your pet’s eyes;

Diagnosing Cushing’s disease requires specialized testing. Veterinary endocrinologists recommend that any dog presenting symptoms of Cushing’s disease should have a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry panel, and urinalysis performed as a routine part of the evaluation. (Many veterinary pet insurance policies will cover both the specialist visit and diagnostic testing outlined here.) Because it is less prevalent in cats than in dogs, roughly 80% of cats with Cushing’s disease are diagnosed as they are concurrently being treated for diabetes mellitus.

The 3 most common “screening” tests for Cushing’s disease in dogs are:

1.   Urine cortisol:creatinine ratio;
2.   Low-dose dexamethasone suppression test;
3.   Ultrasound;

Treatment options for your pet with Cushing’s disease vary, and, depending on the type of disease, surgery can be performed. If an adrenal tumor is found, surgical removal may be a viable option, although nonsurgical treatment remains the preferred recommendation by most veterinarians. Presently, there are several efficacious oral medications developed to treat both adrenal and pituitary-originating Cushing’s disease. Your veterinarian will recommend the one best suited for your pet’s treatment.

In our article ”What do I feed my dog now?” Katie and I had discussed what to buy for your dog. There have been lots of reports over poisonous ingredients that were/are being used to formulate certain brands of dog food. We didn’t name the brands but we told you our secret brand for a happy strong dog.

If you’ve read the article you’ll also remember Katie left us hanging with this line at the end “And remember, no chocolate, no onions, no raisins, no grapes, and one I just learned about is no avocados.” I wanted to know “why?” So…

In this article we will discuss the foods that we humans eat with relatively no consequences but can be harmful even deadly for your dog. Some of these will surprise you.

Alcohol: Ingestion can lead to sickness, urination problems or even coma or death from alcohol poisoning.

Anti-freeze: Although not a human food, it can be readily available for them in a car park puddle. It is sweet so if they find it, they will drink it. Even a small amount of antifreeze can be fatal. 3-4 tablespoons can kill a medium sized dog. The main ingredient in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic poison that causes kidney failure, which is often fatal in just a few days.

Apple: The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can result in cyanide poisoning. Any seed or pit from a fruit is dangerous.

Apricot: Same as the apple.

Avocado: Avocadoes are high in fat content and can trigger an upset stomach, vomiting or even pancreatitis. Avocado contains a toxic element called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals.

Baby Food: If it contains onion powder then it is not good. See onions for more explanations.

Bones: Cooked bones can be very hazardous for your dog. They become brittle and can splinter causing your dog to choke or worst, puncture, rupture their stomach lining and intestinal tract. Bad bones are turkey and chicken legs, ham, pork chop and veal.

Bread Dough: Pets who have eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression. When bread dough is ingested your dog’s body heat causes the dough to rise in the stomach. During the rising process alcohol is produced as the dough expands.

Candy: Sugarless candy containing xylitol has been recognized by the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) to be a risk to pets. The compound can cause liver damage.

Cherries: The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.

Eggs (Raw): Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. Additionally, raw eggs are often contaminated with bacteria, such as salmonella, and you could end up giving your dog food poisoning in addition to biotin deficiency.

Grapes or Raisins: Although the minimum lethal dosage is not known, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs when ingested in large quantities. The symptoms are gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea, and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion.

Liver: In small amounts liver is good for your dog, but if the liver intake is too high it can cause nutritional problems because liver has a high content of vitamin A. Consumption of this vitamin in large amounts can lead to vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis A. It could lead to bone problems.

Macadamia Nuts: The toxic compound is unknown but eating as few as six nuts without the shell has been known to cause elevated body temperature, accelerated heartbeat, tremors in the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters.

Onions: Onions cause hemolytic anemia. Red blood cells break down leaving the dog short of oxygen. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion.

Salmon (Raw): The cause is infection by a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. A sudden onset of symptoms occurs 5-7 days after ingestion of fish. Initial symptoms include lethargy and anorexia. Persistent vomiting by the fourth day. There is bloody diarrhea within a few days of vomiting onset. The diarrhea is often bright yellow color. There are enlarged lymph nodes.

Tomatoes and Tomato Plants: These contain atropine which can cause dilated pupils, tremors and irregular heartbeat. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, next is the unripe (green) tomatoes and then the ripe tomato.
